Photos: African Toyboy Threatens to Go on Hunger Strike after Officers 'Seized' his 88 year old Wife

An African toyboy is furious after he took his 88-year-old British wife to a care home for respite - and social workers refused to hand her back.

Carer Ousman Jatta, 45, married pensioner Beryl in the Gambia 13 years ago but moved to the UK with her when she became ill in 2006. The devoted husband dropped her off at a care home in February for respite care while he took a well-deserved three-week break to his native Africa.

But when he went to pick her up he was told social services had intervened and ruled his dementia-suffering wife couldn't return home with him.

Devastated Ousman has now threatened to go on a hunger strike if Bristol City Council don't hand
back his wife who he says has pleaded to return home.

The authority said it has now agreed an "appropriate care plan" and while Mrs Jutta is still not home, her husband said he is confident the council will relent.

The supermarket security worker said:
"They have used their power against me to keep my wife in a nursing home against her and my wishes. I care for her better than anyone and I feel very sad.
Every time I go to the Gambia I contact social services for respite, but they never told me they were going to keep my wife.
To me Beryl is not old, she is a human being and no matter if she is old or young she is my wife. I would never neglect Beryl. I love Beryl. I'm feeling bad to see her in a nursing home whilst I am ready to look after my own wife.
As soon as I came to this country I'm looking after her and nothing has happened to her. I don't say that the nursing home is bad but to me the belief I have is that you take a person to a home if that person has no-one to look after her but as far as Beryl is concerned, I am ready to look after her until God finalises."
Retired shop worker Beryl moved to the Gambia more than 17 years ago and met Ousman when he helped translate for her in a local shop. The pair became firm friends and dated for four years before they got married in 2002.

But they were forced to come back to the UK when she fell ill and doctors advised the mum-of-two would get better treatment at her home in Bristol.

Ousman became her primary carer along with local authority carers who visit during the day while he is at work. He booked her in for respite care at Avon Lodge Care Centre in Bristol while he went on a break to the Gambia on February 5, telling him he would be back in three weeks.

But when he called on February 27 to say he would pick her up the next day, he was told he couldn't collect her and had to call social workers for more information.
"I asked why and they said 'contact social services'," he said.
"It was a weekend so I called social services on Monday morning and the only thing they told me was they thought I was tired and this and that and that I had left her. I have said in the past that I am tired and that some time in the future I might need to leave her, but I have never abandoned Beryl.
I have access to her when I go to the nursing home to see Beryl but as far as I'm concerned it's not the best place for her to be. I promised to myself and to God I shall never let her down. Beryl is my first priority. I am used to Beryl - we are used to each other.
When I finish work at 10 o'clock she will not go to bed and tells her carers she is waiting for her husband."
A legal expert who specialises in health and welfare said social workers don't have the power to keep someone against their will.

A spokesman for Bristol City Council said: "We have been in regular contact with Mr Jatta over a period of time regarding his wife's care and are pleased to have agreed an appropriate care plan with him which puts the best interests of Mrs Jatta first."

Ex-Military Governor of Anambra Pleads with Igbo Parents to Reduce Bride Price

Former Military governor of old Anambra State, Col. Robert Akonobi (rtd), has pleaded with Igbo parents to reduce the bride price of their daughters so that ‘’our young boys can marry them.”

Speaking at the industrial city of Nnewi, Anambra State during the traditional wedding ceremony of the daughter of a business mogul, Chief Louis Onwugbenu, Onyinye and her husband, Bosah
Chukwuogo, weekend, Col. Akonobi said:
‘’To me, this topic (bride price) has been dealt with in the past by Ndigbo, who came out
with a reduced bride price, to enable our young boys marry our young girls.”
Akonobi also cautioned that men should study their proposed wives closely and longer before engaging into marriage because “once you marry, no one else can put it asunder.”

Nnewi was agog as dignitaries from all works of life trooped to the residence of Chief Onwugbenu for the memorable event. The dignitaries who were from both the military, political and manufacturing circles, including Col Akonobi, Hon. Clement Nwankwu, former member of the House of Representatives; Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers of Gabros International Limited and Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Limited, Chief Gabriel and Innocent Chukwuma respectively, among others.

The issue of high bride price was discussed extensively at the occasion. Hon. Nwankwu, in his own speech, prayed that Chief Onwugbenu and his wife would live long to enjoy the fruits of their children, especially those who married from outside their areas.

Also, speaking, Mrs. Onwugbenu expressed gratitude that her daughter’s hand was given out in marriage and prayed that her in-laws who came all the way from Awka to marry her daughter, would go back home safely. Father of the bride, Onwugbenu, in his own speech, said he had already blessed his daughter and her husband to go and make a good home.

On the bride price controversy in Igbo land, Onwugbenu declared:
“We do not charge money as bride price for someone to marry my daughter. To me, what is important is that my daughter should live in peace with her husband. Let her husband’s family members accept her as part and parcel of their family.”

FG sacks Director of FAAN over appointment irregularities

The Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka has sacked the Director of finance of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr Tochukwu Bede Uchendu, over allegations of irregularities associated with his appointment into office as well as granting unapproved waivers worth N1 billion.

Mr Uchendu's sack was effected following a petition by the Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) and the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) dated March 23rd and addressed to the office of the Head of Service.

The unions had alleged that he was still serving as a director in a company owned by the minister, Consumer Investment Limited, and therefore “it is obvious that he may not be able to discharge his duties without fear or favor as he would have to contend with conflict of interests because of his ownership as a board member of Consumer Investment Limited, a company which the wife of the minister is also a serving Director.”

His sack which was contained in a letter dated April 27, 2015, and signed by the director of Human Resources, A. A. Tsafe, for the minister of aviation reads in part
“I wish to refer to our letter reference number FMA/FAAN/7090/T2/105 dated March 13, 2015, on the above subject and regretfully inform you that the letter is hereby withdrawn pending the conclusion of the necessary due process on the matter, when that is concluded, FAAN, the appropriate authority, will issue you with a formal letter of appointment. We regretfully inform you that the letter (his appointment letter) is hereby withdrawn pending the conclusion of the necessary due process on the matter,” the ministry stated.
The letter further directed Mr Tochukwu Uchendu to vacate the office until the due process was concluded and formal letter of appointment issued to him.

Strange case of how 2 unrelated men with same name & identical looks sparked the need for fingerprinting in the US

The man on the left was called Will West, while the one on the right was called William West, and they were both sentenced to jail at Leavenworth Penitentiary in Kansas over 100 years ago.

Will West arrived at the same prison in 1903, two years after William West was imprisoned. His arrival caused the records clerk at the prison considerable confusion, because he was convinced he’d processed him two years previously.

The clerk, M.W. McClaughry, asked Will West if he’d ever been to the prison before. West said he hadn’t.

McClaughry then set about taking his Bertillon measurements – named after the French policeman Alphonse Bertillon – which was the usual method of identifying people and involved recording the dimensions of key physical features.

McClaughry, still convinced the man before him had already been to the prison, looked up his name in his filing system and found one William West – who looked identical to Will West in the photographs in every respect.

They even shared the same Bertillon measurements.

But Will West insisted to McClaughry that it was not him: ‘That’s my picture, but I don’t know where you got it, for I know I have never been here before.’

To McClaughry’s shock, he was absolutely right, too. William West was a different person altogether and in fact had been admitted to the prison two years previously for murder.
The case highlighted the flaws in the Bertillon method and it wasn’t long before the U.S authorities turned to fingerprinting.

Its pioneer was Scotland Yard’s Sgt. John K. Ferrier, who met McClaughry at the St Louis World Fair in 1904 while he was guarding the Crown Jewels, which were on tour.
He told the U.S prison officer how Scotland Yard had been using fingerprinting for the past three years and evangelised its accuracy.

McClaughry was sold, and after being instructed on the technique he introduced it to Leavenworth Prison. America’s first national fingerprint repository was established shortly afterwards.

None of the rescued 293 females is from Chibok - Borno govt

Borno state govt says profiling of the 293 females rescued from Sambisa forest yesterday April 28th shows that they are from Damboa local government and not from Chibok as was highly speculated.

Speaking with newsmen in Maiduguri today April 29th, the state Commissioner for Information, Dr. Mohammed Bulama, say the rescued females are from Bumsiri village in Damboa Local government area and were all kidnapped from the village by the sect members.

"These girls and women rescued are still our daughters as much as the Chibok girls and we have to commend the military for liberating them, hoping that the rest will equally be liberated. Though everyone had thought they were the Chibok girls because of the hype surrounding the abduction of the girls, but we should not lose sight of the fact that they are as important as the Chibok girls and those that are still in captivity, which we hope would be liberated soon. But at the moment, we are looking up to the time the 293 women and girls would be handed to us so that we can begin the process of rehabilitating and reintegrating them back into the society.” he said

Fuel scarcity: Federal Government to pay marketers N156bn fuel subsidy claims

In order to prevent current fuel scarcity, The Federal Government, yesterday, said it would pay MOWAN N156 billion, out of the about N256.2 billion the marketers claim is owed to them in subsidy claims.

Minister of Finance, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala made this statement at the World Customs Day event held in Abuja yesterday, expressed optimism that the payment, which is expected to be made today, will help address the current fuel scarcity plaguing the country. According to her, the Federal Government is committed to ending the fuel scarcity within the shortest time and that despite the revenue challenges facing the government, the issue of fuel subsidy payments to oil marketers remain a huge priority.

She stated further that “We have been engaging oil marketers over the scarcity issue. We paid them N350 billion and N31 billion in the foreign exchange differential in December. “Tomorrow (which is today), we will be paying them N100 billion for which we had earlier given them IOUs, and interest rate differentials of N56 billion. I am about to sign to get that paid and I think Nigerians will agree that the government is making good effort to accommodate the oil marketers. They are also Nigerians and they also need to co-operate with us".

The Minister of Information, Patricia Akwashiki, stated that the incoming administration of Gen Muhammodu Buhari will not inherit fuel scarcity immediately because the country has enough fuel in its reserves for almost 1 month, 27 days to be precise.

She said “I want to assure that we have enough fuel to supply and the problem is not that we do not have fuel on ground. We have a problem with the tanker drivers and that has to do with the non-payment of fuel subsidy claims But from tomorrow (which is today), the Coordinating Minister of economy is going to start paying off some of the liabilities we have in that sector and it will ease off,’’.

Two men arrested for death of co-worker who was mistakenly cooked in an industrial oven

Bumble Bee Foods and two managers were charged by Los Angeles prosecutors yesterday with violating safety regulations in the death of a worker who was cooked in an industrial oven with tons of tuna.

Jose Melena was performing maintenance in a 35-foot-long oven at the company’s Santa Fe Springs plant before dawn Oct. 11, 2012, when a co-worker, who mistakenly believed Melena was in the bathroom, filled the pressure cooker with 12,000 pounds of canned tuna and it was turned on.

When a supervisor noticed Melena, 62, was missing, an announcement was made on the intercom and employees searched for him in the facility and parking lot, according to a report by the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

After a 2 hour search, the pressure cooker, which had reached a temperature of 270 degrees, was turned off and opened and that's where is body was found. The 2 coworkers, Rodriguez, 63 and Florez, 42,who turned the cooker on, could face up to three years in prison and fines up to $250,000 if convicted of all charges, prosecutors said.

The charges specify that the company and the two men willfully violated rules that require implementing a safety plan, rules for workers entering confined spaces, and a procedure to keep machinery or equipment turned off if someone’s working on it.

The state’s occupational safety agency previously cited the San Diego-based company for failing to properly assess the danger to employees working in large ovens and fined it $74,000.

Bumble Bee Foods faces a maximum fine of $1.5 million but the company has appealed the penalties, stating that it  has improved its safety program after the tragedy.

“We remain devastated by the loss of our colleague Jose Melena in the tragic accident,” the company said in a statement. “We disagree with and are disappointed by the charges filed by the Los Angeles district attorney’s office.”

I was paid N10,000 - cousin of school girl abducted to Libya

15 year old Ogun schoolgirl Precious Nwaigwe who was abducted and sold to Libya by her maternal cousin Kelvin Okorie said she felt betrayed by him. (Kelvin Okorie and Ogbonna Njoku above)

Okorie who was arrested and and interrogated at the Police Command headquarters in Ikeja was paraded with his friend Ogbonna Njoku aka John.

Okorie said he handed Precious over to Njoku's brother- Nzube Chukwu who was based in Libya but didn't know that they were going to sell her into the sex trade. He said he was told that Precious could finish her secondary education in Libya then earn money by working at a fuel station and send some of her money back home to help her parents and didn't know anything else other than that.
Okorie said they went to Njoku's house in Alaba, got Njoku's brother's number and was given N10,000.

Precious said on the day she was handed over to her pimp, she noticed Okorie arguing with his friends over money but never knew that the money was the cost of her slavery into the sex trade.

Okorie said he was only given N10,000 by his friend when he told him he was broke, he said they didn't have any discussion about Precious being trafficked for sex. The Police asked him if he got any consent from Precious's parents before he sent her to Libya but he said he didn't. They further asked him why he didn't tell her parents that he had sent her to Libya when her parents started to look for her if his intentions were innocent, but he said he didn't know why he didn't tell them.

Njoku however said he wasn't involved in the abduction, he said that Okorie, Precious and one of their friends Daniel asked him for his brother's number in Libya, he said he gave them the number and left hence was surprised when he got arrested by the police in regards to this crime. He admitted that he didn't know what happened to Precious until after his arrest.

Okorie said he lied to Precious that he told her mother about your journey to Libya which was apparently a lie. Njoku said he was never told by Njoku that Precious was declared missing by her parents and was innocent of the crime he had been accused of.

Both suspects will be arraigned shortly.

Precious was  only allowed to return to Nigeria by the pimp after she had paid off the $6,000 the pimp had supposedly paid to Okorie and his goons to buy her.

Buhari lacks the powers to stop AIT from covering his activities - Dokpesi

The Chairman of Daar Communications, owners of AIT, Chief Raymond Dokpesi says that the president-elect, Gen Buhari lacked the constitutional powers to stop his TV station from covering his activities. According to him, the decision to bar the station on Monday April 27th was a reminder of the Decree 4 era which he, Buhari, enacted against freedom of the press when he was in power
"I am sure that the President-elect needs to be reminded of Decree 4, and he should be clearly reminded that section 32 of the constitution makes it mandatory for the media to hold public officials accountable to the people. The president-elect said that he does not want to be covered by AIT, but AIT has a responsibility to the Nigerian public to report the things that are happening.
"There are three national networks available for national coverage in Nigeria, the NTA, AIT and Silverbirds. You cannot stop a foremost private station from reporting in Nigeria, it brings us back to Decree 4 era.”he said
On the controversial documentary about General Buhari and his family which was run by the TV station during the election, Mr Dokpesi said the station was a private entity that could run anything that it feels is fact and accurate.
"If they had produced their own documentary to say this is what we want and AIT did not publish it, then that is another matter. What is obviously very clear is the fact that AIT believes that the historical information about the President elect that were ran, were factually correct. Nothing was done to defame him or impinge on his character or integrity.” he told Premium Times

Teenager stabs sleeping 9yr old boy to death because he wanted 'to see what it was like'

18 year old William Shultz, (left) stabbed 9 year old Jordon Almgren (right) while he slept just a day after being sent to hospital with mental health problems

According to a report by UK Mirror William confessed to stabbing his best friend's little brother to death because 'he wanted to see what it was like', telling police later that he wanted to murder someone 'before the end of the world'.

Shultz gave the extraordinary confession during an interview in jail, in which he calmly said: "I wanted to see what it was like to take a life before someone tried to take mine."

Wearing a yellow, jail-issued jumpsuit with his hair cut short, Shultz said: "I wish that I hadn't. I think about what if that was my little brother. In that sense, I do feel bad. I do have remorse for what I did. But there's a reason for everything that happens."

Shultz murdered Jordan early on Sunday morning after he visited the family home following an argument with his mum.

The killer told how his family had become concerned about his mental health and Shultz was briefly hospitalized just a day before the stabbing.

Police were sent to Shultz's house and were asked by his family to evaluate his mental health on Saturday.

It was determined that he did not meet the criteria for a mental health sectioning – but the teen agreed to be taken by ambulance to the county hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Once he was discharged, Shultz visited his mum's house before they had the fatal row.
In an interview with American news site Contra Costa Times, Shultz said tragic Jordon's older brother had been his best friend since high school.
Shultz was arrested Sunday on suspicion of Jordon's murder, and is being held on $1 million bail in the County Jail in Martinez.

When police arrived at the family home, Jordan has already been sent to hospital.
Shultz, who had spent the night at Jordon's home, was identified as the suspect, and a police spokesman said he attacked the boy overnight for "unknown reasons."
Detectives are currently trying to establish a motive, police spokesman Jimmy Lee said.
A nurse treating Shultz found slashing wounds on his wrist after he accidentally caught his arm on a glass window twice during the stabvbing.

A memorial for Jordon has now been set up near the family's home in Discovery Bay, California.
Shultz, who said he has no criminal record, lived in Discovery Bay for about 10 years and said his past played a role in the stabbing.
"A lot goes into what led me to that moment," he said.

About a month ago, Shultz said, he got in a fight with his parents and left home for Los Angeles.
"What's the purpose of why I'm on this Earth? I need to find that," he said, adding that he started noticing "coincidences or miracles".
He said his relatives all expressed concerns over his mental state, and shared books with him that he said contained "mysterious messages".
He said he became obsessed with the number three and those "coincidences" from books.
On Thursday, he said he bought survival gear and planned to find a way to South America to avoid an upcoming American civil war.
He bought a "Bear Grylls knife", which he said was the stabbing weapon.
"I saw it as the world was sort of coming to an end," he said, adding that he told this to his mum.
"She didn't want to hear it. It concerned her about my mental state. She wanted me to see a psychiatrist."

On Saturday Shultz said he was taken to the county hospital, where he spoke to a psychiatrist for two hours, sharing his books but telling the doctor he was not hearing voices.
"He didn't even know how to take it," he said.
"He decided to discharge me and sent me home in a taxi, and I later found out he called my mom and told her I was delusional."

A Contra Costa Health Services spokeswoman said on Monday she couldn't comment on the decision to discharge Shultz, citing health privacy laws.

On his return home, Shultz said he fought with his mum and she kicked him out, sending him to his best friend's house.
At the house that day, lots of kids were around playing video games and eating pizza, he said.
Eventually everyone went to sleep, but at 3am Shultz said he began to feel paranoid.
"I couldn't sleep," he said.
"I had all these thoughts going through my mind."
He said he thought of killing his best friend but had concerns because he was too big.
"I singled out his little brother and went into his room while he was asleep," he said.
"At the time, there was no feeling. I was asking myself why am I standing over him? What am I about to do?
"I put my hand over his face, and I stabbed him."

Shultz said he confessed to detectives and stressed that the stabbing was not premeditated.
After the killing, Shultz said he drove to the hospital, where he was later handcuffed by police to his bed.

He said he considered driving to his dad's house to shoot himself.
"But then no-one could make sense of why I killed my best friend's little brother," he said.
